Kangana Ranaut, For Second Time In A Week, Meets BJP Chief JP Nadda

Kangana Ranaut, for the second time in a week, met BJP Chief JP Nadda today, days after she was pulled up by the party for her provocative remarks on the farmers' protest.

There has been no statement by the party over what transpired in the meeting.

Earlier this week, the 38-year-old first-time MP, whose latest film 'Emergency' is set to release on September 6, had suggested that the farmers' protest could have led to a Bangladesh-like crisis in India.

Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's five-time Prime Minister, was forced to flee her country on August 5 in the face of massive protests over job quotas.

The BJP has disapproved of her statements and said the actor-turned-MP, a four-time national award winner, is not authorised to speak on policy matters.

The Mandi MP, a Padma Shri winner, also alleged the involvement of China and the US in the "conspiracy", drawing flak from the Opposition parties.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party has directed Kangana Ranaut to not make any statement of this kind in future," the ruling party said in a statement as her controversial remarks threatened to inflame an issue it has tried hard to contain over the last few years.

Thousands of farmers from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and other places had held an agitation at Delhi's borders for several months over the now-repealed farm laws.

"The BJP is committed to following the principles of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas' and social harmony," the statement added.

On Tuesday, the Himachal Pradesh Assembly adopted a resolution moved by the ruling Congress condemning Ms Ranaut's remarks.

The same day, Aam Aadmi Party's Haryana unit had staged statewide protests against Ms Ranaut's remarks on the farmers protest, with a party leader saying her statement indicates the BJP's "mindset" towards farmers.

Bengaluru Woman Choked To Death At Home, Cops Suspect Husband

A 25-year-old woman was choked to death, allegedly by her husband, at her home in Bengaluru late on Tuesday night. Police said Navyashree's husband Kiran has been taken into custody and is being questioned about the incident.

A police statement says the complaint in the matter was filed by Navyashree's friend Aishwarya who stayed over at her place that night. Aishwarya has told police that Navyashree called her Tuesday morning and said she was upset over her marriage. She then asked her to come over.

Accordingly, Aishwarya reached Navyashree's home at Kengeri in SMV layout around 4.30 pm Tuesday. Soon after, Anil, another friend of Navyashree, joined them and the three discussed her troubled marriage over dinner. Anil told Navyashree to file a police complaint against her husband.

Navyashree and Aishwarya later dropped Anil home. On returning to their place, they went to sleep around 11.30 am. When Aishwarya woke up at 6 am next morning, she found Navyashree had been strangled to death. She called the police and reported the incident.

Police suspect that Kiran, who was suspicious of Navyashree, may have entered the house at night using his key and choked her to death. He has been detained and police are questioning him to get to the bottom of the matter.

Amid the chaos in Kolkata in the wake of the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally on Tuesday to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a video of an elderly man braving through the police's water cannons has gone viral on social media.

In the video, which was shared by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders as well, the man wearing a saffron-coloured outfit can be seen standing undetered and facing the water cannons used by the Kolkata Police to disperse the protesting crowd. The man also kept waving the national flag in his hand.
‘Steadfast determination against state govt’: BJP

Reacting to the video, BJP leader Locket Chatterjee said that the man in the clip is “defining his steadfast determination” against the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee.

“End anarchy, end fascism. We all demand the end of TMC's tyranny. With the Tiranga in hand amid blasting water cannons, this man is defining his steadfast determination to against the oppression of @MamataOfficial. I stand by him, the people of the state stand by him and the entire country is standing by him,” she wrote on X.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also shared the video saying: “The man, waving a national flag, on the iconic Howrah bridge, amidst blazing water cannon, is the ultimate symbol of defiance against an oppressive Mamata Banerjee regime.”

Trinamool Congress spokesperson Riju Dutta shared a collage picture of several protesters, which also included the elderly man, calling them “hooligans of BJP”.

“They wanted “Dead Bodies”, they wanted to create a Anarchy like Bangladesh in Bengal. They pelted stones at police, broke barricades, destroyed police vehicles, set fire to motorcycles, multiple police badly injured, IC Chanditala head split wide open…This will NOT BE TOLERATED!,” he wrote on X.

Dutta further thanked the West Bengal Police for “keeping their composure even under attack and restoring law and order”.

Several members of the new student body ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’ and other organisations held a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally in Kolkata to protest against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The rally was held despite the state police terming it as “illegal” and “unauthorized”, citing concerns over potential violence and public disorder.

During the demonstration, clashes erupted between police and protesters in various areas of Kolkata and Howrah as the protesting members tried to breach barricades to march towards the West Bengal secretariat. The police resorted to the use of teargas and lathi-charge to disperse BJP leaders and supporters who marched towards Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar.

Meanwhile, over 200 people were arrested by police in connection with the rally.

On Wednesday, the BJP called for a 12-hour ‘Bangla bandh’ in protest against the “brutal” police action against “peaceful” protesters during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that she will call an assembly session next week and pass a Bill within 10 days to ensure capital punishment for rapists.

"We will send this Bill to the Governor. If he doesn't pass, we will sit outside Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed and he cannot evade accountability this time," she said while speaking on the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

Banerjee said that for such crime, there is only one punishment - "to hang till death."

However, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said there was already a law on crime against women but its implementation was not happening in Bengal. He also said that Mamata Banerjee was responsible for the violence in the state.

Mamata Banerjee's first public rally comes on the day the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called a 12-hours Bandh. BJP leader Bappa Chatterjeesaid the Bandh has been called for two reasons - the RG Kar incident and police action against the protestero on Tuesday.

"The youth and students had gathered to put forth their point in Nabanna but there is a dictatorship is going on in the state. She (Mamata Banerjee) herself is the police minister, the health minister and the chief minister herself. Despite being in charge of everything, neither the police administration is doing any work here, nor the health department."

BJP calls Bengal Bandh today, Nabanna protests take a violent turn -- here's what has transpired so far

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a Bengal Bandh, a 12-hour strike today from 6 am to 6 pm, in response to the police action taken against student protestors during a protest march towards West Bengal secretariat Nabanna.

The protestors sought Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation over the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata that took place earlier this month.

Banerjee is also the state Health and Family Welfare Minister apart from being the Home Minister and CM of Bengal. Union Minister and BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar accused the state government of ignoring the pulse of the people and their demands for justice.

Meanwhile, BJP supporters stopped a train at the Hooghly railway station. Kolkata Police has arrested student leader Satyen Lahiri in Cooch Behar and has detained protesting BJP workers at Alipurduar. Government bus drivers in the state are wearing helmets for their safety.

Nabanna Abhijan protest call given

The protest call was given by 'Pashchim Banga Chhatra Samaj', an unregistered student body, and a dissident state government employees' platform 'Sangrami Joutha Mancha'. They demanded Mamata Banerjee's resignation over the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old medic at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The protest march towards the West Bengal secretariat turned violent as protestors threw stones at the police and broke barricades at the Howrah Bridge. In return, the police resorted to using tear gas, water cannons and lathicharge to disperse the crowds as the scenes at Nabanna turned chaotic.

'Criminals in garb of police uniform': BJP attacks Kolkata Police

BJP leader and co-in-charge of West Bengal Amit Malviya on Tuesday said in a post on X that the Kolkata Police allegedly used hockey sticks to beat up protestors.

While sharing a video on X, he wrote: "When did professional police force start using hockey sticks? Is it part of police standard operating manual or are these criminals in the garb of police uniform? These instances are increasingly making Kolkata CP's position untenable."

He also urged the Supreme Court to hold Mamata Banerjee accountable for the gross abuse of state power and disproportionate use of force.

'Used water cannons mixed with chemicals': Agnimitra Paul on Kolkata Police

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Wednesday accused the Kolkata Police of using water cannons mixed with chemicals on the student protestors. Calling the police "spineless", she said that the cops have invalidated the Supreme Court's orders. The top court had directed the West Bengal government to not take any action against peaceful protestors.

She further said, "The police attacked unarmed protestors using stones and even resorted to lathicharge. I have pictures of the same. They used water cannons mixed with chemicals on the protestors. They are unable to provide safety to women of the state and when women protest, they use force to dispere them."

Sukanta Majumdar demands release of arrested students

"The police and Mamata Banerjee have unleashed violence on the student agitation. They have lathi-charged, used tear gas and used water cannons on the democratic, peaceful protest... Our demand is simple: the students who have been arrested by the police should be released," Majumdar said in a statement.

'Do they look like students?': TMC minister decries protestors

Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Shashi Panja questioned whether those leading the Nabanna protests were students or not. While speaking to India Today TV, she said that these protests should have been peaceful from the very beginning, which is more than welcome.

She added that the protesting junior doctors distanced themselves from the Chhatra Samaj. "If you look at the visuals that are emerging, do these people look like students? Are they really seeking justice? Or were they trying to promote their own political agenda? Look at the vandalism," Panja added.

People will reject BJP's "game plan": Kunal Ghosh on bandh

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh on Tuesday said that the Bandh revealed the BJP's intent to foment disturbances in the state. He also expressed confidence that the people of the state would reject the saffron party's "game plan" and ensure normalcy.

"I am standing in support of the students who are protesting for my daughter. I am very proud that the students have taken such a risk and are out today for my daughter. They should intensify their protest and should keep demanding justice," the victim's father said.

'Impose President's rule': Suvendu Adhikari's request to WB Governor

Senior BJP leader and Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to impose President's rule in the state, given the developments over the Kolkata medic rape and murder case.

"This movement will continue and force CM Mamata Banerjee to resign. President's rule should be imposed in Bengal and election needs to be conducted," Adhikari said.

Essential services, public transport to function as normal

Alapan Bandopadhyay, chief advisor to the Chief Minister, said that the government will not support the bandh, while urging residents to not participate.

He also assured that essential services such as medical care, drinking water, rail services, and electricity will run as usual.

Public transportation, businesses including shops and marketplaces, and educational institutions are expected to remain open. Government employees are also encouraged to work.

Bengal Bandh Today After Police Use Tear Gas, Water Canon On Protesters

The BJP has called for a 6 am to 6 pm bandh (strike) in West Bengal to protest against the police action on those who took part in the march to the state secretariat 'Nabbana' over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata.

    The BJP has called for a 12-hour general strike after police lathi-charged, and used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters attempting to reach 'Nabanna' on Tuesday.

    The 'Nabanna Abhijan' call was given by an unregistered student body 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj' and a dissident state government employees' platform 'Sangrami Joutha Mancha'. The ruling Trinamool Congress alleged that this was a BJP-backed protest.

    The protesters were demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

    Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that over 160 protestors, including 17 women, suffered injuries in the police action. Police claimed that several cops were also injured in the clashes.

    Mr Adhikari, who is the State's Leader of Opposition, urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to "impose President's Rule" in West Bengal.

    "We are forced to give the dawn-to-dusk strike call for a general strike as this autocratic regime is turning a deaf ear to the voices of people, the demand for justice for the victim. Instead of justice, Mamata Banerjee's police are turning on the peace-loving people of the state, who only wanted a safe and secure environment for women," BJP state president and union minister Sukanta Majumdar said.

    The West Bengal government urged people not to respond to BJP's bandh. "The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. All steps shall be taken to ensure that normal life is unaffected," said Alapan Bandopadhyay, the chief advisor to Ms Banerjee.

    The state issued a notification stating that all government offices would remain open and all employees, except those facing exigencies or are on leave, would have to report for duty on August 28 or face show-cause for their unauthorised absence.

    The Trinamool said the BJP called a strike to gain political ground and said that there "will be no bandh" on Wednesday,
